Hey,

So I went to go see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire today because I had time (it was good), and as I'm sitting there watching the movie, a sudden realization came to me. The world of Harry Potter is pretty ghetto. It came to me around the train scene when Harry writes Sirius a letter and gives it to Hedwig to take. Now, if they are wizards and witches (or wizardesses), why the hell do they need to send letters to each using an owl?? Can't they just call up some kind of communication portal or something and talk to other wizards and witches in an instant. Plus, if the story parallels modern Britain (which it kinda looked like it did in the first and third movie), don't they have phones or an internet, if not at least a telegraph?

Also, why would the report for the newspaper have a cameraman who is operating a camera from the 1800s? Don't they have regular camera at their disposal? The story kinda does parallel modern times. There should've been some kind of modern camera somewhere.

And why do they need candles? They don't have electricity or conjure up some electricity?

I'm not attacking the world. I just sat there and was like "Ha ha. This is pretty ghetto. Classy yet ghetto." I just thought it was funny.

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want, either good or bad. When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your LJ and be surprised about what people remember about you.

I'm Sorry Racquel...

for being a jerk, doing jerkish things, and just overall being the me that you hate. I'm really sorry for whatever I did. I didn't mean it and I'm sorry. Or if I've already exhausted my number of "sorries," then please hate me. I know I deserve it and will live with it.

I am getting hooked on LOST on ABC. It's a really cool show with really cool twists and deep characters, all sort of tragic in a way. I hate how the episodes don't reveal more about the plot, but it's good that they reveal more about the characters, seeing as how it's a character-driven drama.

So the Dharma Initiative (in case you were wondering)
is a program set up by the Hanso Foundation to find new ways to advance the human race in our quest to find a harmonous society. It was established by two scientists from the University of Michigan (strangely enough the same university where B.F. Skinner went) who decided to run an experiment to see if their developed ideas from Skinner's work was plausible and effective, the nature of which is still unknown.

But the main part we want here is B.F. Skinner because the show is based around him. B.F. Skinner was a psychologist (the most respected and famous in his field and ranked as one of the greatest psychologist to have existed) who mainly worked with behavioralism and operant conditioning. His most famous work was the "Skinner-box" in which he placed several mice in a box. These mice were conditioned to push a button that would release food for the mice. After several weeks of being feed by the push of a button, Dr. Skinner wanted to see whether the mice would continue to push the button indefinately after the machine that fed them was turned off. He did so and found that the mice CONTINUED to push the button indefinately, still believing that if pushed enough, the button would yield food. Now take this idea to a larger scale and put people into the equation. We have Station 6, the Swan, of the Dharma Initiatvie where we have people pushing a button for no real good reason, except still believing that if it is pushed they will be safe.

Skinner also worked on something called Social Engineering, the idea that people could be conditioned to behave in ways that would make them happier and highly efficient people, a virtual utopia. He wrote a book on it called "Walden II" and believed that it could accomplished. All that is need is conditioning, a reinforcement of the positive responses we want from people and consequences from negative, non-desired responses (the shark and other monsters on the island). By reinforcing (promoting) postive responses, a person can be conditioned to only repeat those responses as they yield positve results for the person.

Skinner also worked with the idea of freewill, eventually disproving that it ever existed as it conflicted with data from behaviorist studies. Freewill, in his words, "is an illusion."

That's some of the stuff that builds the backstory of LOST. It's only going to get more interesting.

Hey,

Well nothing's happened. What a shocker?! hahaha.

Something Sarah said has really been bugging me and made me realize that I'm a hermit. =(  I wish I wasn't. I hate being in this house all the time, but there's hardly anyone to ever go out and do something with. Most of the time I just don't ask b/c I'm afraid that they're like say flat out NO just out of spite.

I have no idea what movie to show for speech. Any suggestions? I'll take anything at this point.

Why do I get a feeling that the show 'Lost' is going to end up with like the island not actually existing, it only exists in the minds of the people on it and that the only way to get off of it is that they have rise above the troubles they have with themselves? Yeah that was totally random. hahahaha.

I don't know why our school doesn't do it but I highly recommend that many of you take the MBTI (Myers-Brigg Type Indicator). It's an accurate personality test/inventory on your skills and stuff. I mean it's really good on accuracy. It will tell you about what careers are best suited to your personality/abilities. It also tells you A LOT more but I'll let you find that out for yourself. It's a very good test. Max amount of time on it is like 10 minutes. Just type in "Free MBTI personality test" into Google and you will get different websites with the test. Usually comes in 2 forms: the somewhat accurate 4 question version and the very accurate 60-90 some question test. I recommend you take the 60-90 min one. If you think it's stupid, this is the most widely used personality test in the business world so it would probably be a good idea to take it anyway.

This is for you:

I'm really, really sorry about what I say that makes you sad. I've been thinking about it all day and I just can't tell you how sorry I am for making you feel that way sometimes. I don't want to make you feel that way, it's just that somethings come into my mind and I brood on them too much. I NEVER want to make you feel sad in any way. I'm going to start trying to better myself. I'm really sorry for everything I've said. Forgive me.

Shaney.

Well...

Finally we get a holiday. It's really relaxing. I woke up this morning and totally forgot it was a Monday. Makes you wish that summer was still around.

Anyway nothing much has really happened. I'm working on hw right now, History vocab to be more exact. Bleh. Almost done though. Then I have to write my paragraphs for Martinez, prepare my speech for Ashley, and some other stuff. Ehhhh.

I've also decided to just stop trying learning Spanish. I don't really like the language. It's just not appealing to me so instead I'm going to take up French. I thought about doing this during the Summer but I never got around to doing it, lazy me. Then I got this:

You Should Learn French

C'est super! You appreciate the finer things in life... wine, art, cheese, love affairs.
You are definitely a Parisian at heart. You just need your tongue to catch up...

So I'm going to start taking up French. I just need about $21 bucks for the book. I'm going to learn it on my own--I like things much better that way.

Oh yeah. I finally joined CinTech. The President is...okay in my opinion (like I could do a better job...hahaha God), but he's leaving out some stuff and rules for screenwriting. It's only a school club though, you don't have to follow ALL the rules of screenwriting and filmmaking. I like that sort of freedom. Too bad you can't always have it in Hollywood. God forbid!!

P.S. Thanks Racquel for everything that you do for me. It makes me happy. =)
